John's interests in viticulture
began in 1989 when he was appointed manager of Red Hill Estate. His
task was to establish a vineyard on the cattle property owned by Sir
Peter and Lady Derham on the Mornington Peninsula.
John's aim of maximising the performance
of assets was recognised when in 1994 Red Hill Estate was awarded the
prestigious Victorian Vineyard of the Year award.
John's belief in soil management
has led to the introduction of procedures for improving soil quality
at Red Hill and the other vineyards previously under his care. Aware
of consumer concerns about chemical use in vineyards John has been involved
in introducing biological controls for pests and diseases such as the
Light Brown Apple Moth and Botrytis.
